A new variant of malware disguised as a Google-linked application has been discovered that has already infected 25 million devices
Many of us know Agent Smith from the famous Matrix trilogy. In reality, however, there is another Agent Smith: a mobile malware that is spreading at an alarming rate.
Check Point Research recently discovered a new variant of mobile malware that has already infected around 25 million devices, while the user remains completely oblivious. Disguised as a Google-linked application, the core of the malware exploits various already known Android vulnerabilities and automatically replaces applications installed on the device with malicious versions without the user doing anything.
Dubbed Agent Smith, the malware currently uses its extensive access to device resources to display for-profit, naturally fake, ads. This activity resembles previous malware campaigns such as Gooligan, Hummingbad and CopyCat and can infect all smartphones updated even beyond Android v.7.
To remove malicious apps likely to be affected by Agent Smith, Check Point recommends following the steps below:
For Android:
Settings menu
Click on App or Application Manager
Navigate to the suspicious app and uninstall it
If not found, remove all recently installed applications
For iPhone:
Settings menu
Scroll to Safari
In the options list, make sure "Block Pop-ups" is selected
Then go to Advanced -> Website Data
For all unrecognized sites listed, do the
