Online misinformation on the rise (Agcom)

By 9 April 2019No Comments

"In the first two months of 2019, online disinformation produced in Italy is growing (+ 10% on the average day of January, + 4% on the average day of February). This is revealed by the second issue of the Observatory on online disinformation published today by the Authority for Guarantees in Communications, in which there is an increasingly marked concentration of disinformation on news and politics topics, which jointly represent 56% of the total contents fake, 3 percentage points more than the 2018 average. The analysis of the textual content of all the articles produced by the disinformation sites in the first two months of the year - continues Agcom - highlights the emergence of 5 main issues under discussion , such as crime and judicial reporting, politics and government affairs, work and lifestyles, economic issues, and weather conditions. With particular regard to the European elections - the Authority still specifies -, the examination of millions of documents generated by thousands of sources shows an increase in the overall space dedicated to the issue by both information and disinformation. However, disinformation content, compared to information content (especially TV and radio), tends to focus more on issues with a strong emotional impact rather than on the specific topic of the European elections. Among the topics of European relevance identified by Eurobarometer - it continues - crime, immigration and unemployment continue to be the most treated in Italy by the sources of disinformation. Crime is the topic most dealt with both by disinformation sites and social media pages / accounts, while immigration is the one on which disinformation has the greatest impact. "
